Core Semikha

Maharat’s Core Semikha is a four-year rabbinic ordination program for Orthodox women. We offer in person, hybrid, and remote learning options.

Who should apply to Core Semikha? Core Semikha students:

  • identify in the affirmative as female

  • identify in the affirmative as Orthodox

  • have had immersive, structured, Torah learning experiences equivalent to one to two years learning full-time in a beit midrash, midrasha, or yeshiva environment

  • be actively engaged in Jewish community settings

  • show initiative in leadership however possible in each student’s social, cultural, and geographic contexts and is excited about growing in her own learning and leadership.

  • be passionate about serving the Jewish people

How do I apply to Core Semika?

  1. Email Dr. Katie Light Soloway, Director of Recruitment and Admissions, to schedule an admissions conversation. This conversation is crucial for determining if the program is a good fit.

  2. Written application. The link for the written application will be sent to you following the admissions conversation. It includes the following sections about your educational background, personal history, personal statements, and reference information.

  3. Learning Skills Assessment. Meet with a Maharat faculty member to learn about your learning experiences and assess your Hebrew and Aramaic reading and translation skills, understanding of concepts and structures in Talmud, understanding and translation of key commentaries, and capacity for learning advancement.

  4. Admissions Interview. Meet with members of the admissions committee for a formal interview.
